"Love and Makua Win Surfboard Races," Honolulu Advertiser, June 21, 1944

The open surfing and tandem surfing championship was held Sunday at Waikiki. Private Love won the open surfing championship contest in a field of 13 star surfers. All the contestants gave an excellent performance of surfing.

The tandem surfing championship was won by Blue Makua and partner Irene. There were nine entrants in this colorful event. Each board rider carried his partner on his shoulder.

Trophies and awards won in Sunday's event will be awarded at a dinner to be given in honor of all the contestants of the Kamehameha Day event. Miss Pearl Stone, who was chosen Miss Waikiki of 1944, will make the award.
