Sutherland is the Hawaiian Surfing Association State meet men's champion. Sutherland edged out Ben Aipa and David Nuuhiwa of California, recently voted the world’s best surfer in a magazine poll.

Conrad Canha, veteran surfer who is a former International Makaha Surfing Meet champion, won the senior men’s division.

Sutherland competed in the age 18-34 bracket, while Canha surfed in the 35-and-over division. Second place in the senior division went to Lord James Blears.

Randy Rarick won the junior crown over Clyde Aikau.

Dino Ching won the boys division, while Gerald Yamasaki was second.

Sharon Weber beat Lani Gay for the women’s division honors.

Kui-O-Hawaii took the team trophy by a tenth of a point over Freedom Riders Surf Club.
