The Pacific coast surf-board riding champion will be picked here late Sunday in the first contest of its kind, so far as is known. The meet is planned by Charles Wright, lifeguard at Mission Beach, who has been riding the surf for four years. Miniature surf-boards of gold, silver, and bronze will be the prizes. Competition will be open to all comers.

"Famed Rider Enters Meet," San Diego Sun, August 31, 1925

Tony Camacho, of surf-board fame from Waikiki, Hawaii, is one of the first entrants In the Pacific coast surf-board riding championship meet, to be held opposite the old bathhouse at Mission Beach, Labor Day. He has ridden In several exhibitions at Mission Beach and has doubled with Duke Kahanamoku, swimmer and surf-board rider.

Word of the tourney ban been sent to Duke Kahanamoku, and he is expected to participate.

Morgan Campbell, youngest known American surf rider, who is a student  and riding partner of Charles W. Wright, lifeguard at north Mission Beach, has also signed up to ride. Morgan is 10 years old and weighs 60 pounds. He rides a surf-board eight feet long, two feet wide and three inches thick, weighing 100 pounds. He stands up,  stands on his head, and rides double on Wright's shoulders. 

Several girls are also practicing to ride in the tournament. 

Those interested in surf riding who do not have surf-boards may get them from Wright at north Mission Beach. He is the promoter of the meet. Entries may be sent to Wright In care of the Sun.

"Surf Riders Will Cavort," San Diego Sun, September 4, 1925

If the breakers Monday are as suitable as they are now, the Pacific coast surf-board tournament at Mission Beach will provide plenty of thrills for spectators on Labor Day. In spite of the cloudy weather, the water is warm, sending the thermometer up to about 68 degrees. The tide will be high at 12:40 PM, measuring five-feet-four-inches, which is very favorable. Large smooth breakers are hoped for by Charles W. Wright, lifeguard at north Mission Beach, who is sponsoring the meet. 

Surf-board riding is comparatively new in this country, having been introduced to the United States by natives of Hawaii. Surf-boards range from six to 10 feet long and weight as much as 140 pounds. They are propelled by no other power than the breakers or swells of the sea, and are carried along at a speed from 10 to 45 miles an hour, depending on the size and speed of the breaker, and the angle at which it is ridden. 

Surf-board riding is considered by many the most thrilling and hazardous water sport, especially on this coast with its huge breakers. 

Spectators may get to the site of the contest by taking the No. 16 streetcar as far as the north end of the bathhouse. 

"Title Contest at Beach Here," San Diego Sun, September 6, 1925

The first surf-board meet ever held will take place in front of the north Mission Beach bathhouse on Monday at 12:30 in the afternoon. The winner will be proclaimed Pacific coast champion and will receive a miniature gold surfboard. Silver and bronze surfboards will also be rewarded.

Contestants will ride the surf in 10 different manners, one point to be given for each that is executed correctly. The various forms are: standing up, turning around, riding backward for four seconds, standing on head, sitting down, riding double down, riding double up, riding on shoulders, three on a board.

Entries include Ernest Judd, Robert Burns, Adolph Spreckels, Edwin Plummer, Johnny Dougherty, Shorty Bethauser, David Jessop, Tony Camacho, Aime and Helen Carmichael, and Morgan Campbell.

"Wright Wins Surf Contest," San Diego Sun, September 9, 1925

Charles W Wright, lifeguard at Mission Beach, is the Pacific coast surf-board champion, having ridden the breakers well enough to take first prize in the tournament in front of the old bathhouse at Mission Beach Monday.

Ernest Judd was runner-up. Morgan Campbell, after eliminating five others who had tied him in an extra competition, took third prize

The judges were Jimmy Warner, A Thedy, and T Prichard.
