Effervescent surf photographer/ journalist/contest director from Sunset Beach, Hawaii; a 

 magazine masthead-listed contributor since 1977; contest director for the Triple Crown of Surfing since 1983. Baker was born (1949) in Toledo, Ohio, and began surfing in 1965, after his family settled near Santa Barbara, California. That same year, the 16-year-old published his first articles and photographs in 

Baker moved to Hawaii in 1970, and in 1976 won the men's division of the state surfing championships; in 1975 he became the director of the Pro Class Trials, an international surfing contest held directly in front of his beachfront house at Sunset Beach. At the end of 1976, Baker—hypersocial and already connected to virtually everyone of note in the surf industry—helped create International Professional Surfers, producers of the first world circuit. Seven years later he was picked to direct the three events that made up the Triple Crown, the prestigious minicircuit that overlaps with the world pro tour.

Baker meanwhile also worked as a judge for national and international amateur contests, including the World Championships, the United States Surfing Championships, and the National Scholastic Surfing Association National Championships. He continued to write surf features and columns, and by 2012 had published nearly 100 pieces in 

 alone, to go with his several hundred published photographs, including two 

 covers and a best-selling poster. From 1974 to 1982 Baker and fellow Hawaiian surf photographer/journalist Leonard Brady worked together as a two-man surf media team under the name Island Style.
