Small pear-shaped tropical island nation located about 250 miles northeast of Venezuela; the easternmost island in the West Indies, and thought to be the second-most popular Caribbean surfing destination, after Puerto Rico. Barbados has been described as having the world's best beach weather, with average daytime temperatures ranging from the low 70s to the upper 80s, and water temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the low 80s. 

The Barbados surf for the most part breaks over flat coral reefs or along pristine white-sand beaches; waves on the Caribbean side of the island are best during winter, with consistent offshore winds grooming the surf; the east and north coasts receive dependable head- high surf all year, with bigger waves hitting the north coast during winter. Barbados has about 30 charted breaks and a dozen more semisecret spots. 

Soup Bowls—a first-rate performance wave with a wedging takeoff, usually compromised by onshore winds—is the island's best-known and most crowded break, and is estimated to have head-high or bigger waves 300 days a year. No two surf breaks along Barbados's 166-square-mile island are more than 45 minutes apart by car. Coral and sea urchins are the island's main surfing hazards.

Malibu surfers Butch Linden and Johnny Fain introduced surfing to Barbados in 1965; they left their boards behind and the sport was picked up by a handful of Bajans (natives) including David Allen, Scaul Worme, and the Knowls brothers Val and Allen. The Barbados Surfing Association was formed three years later, and the country sent teams to the 1968 and 1972 World Surfing Championships, as well as every major international amateur surfing event from 1984 on. 

Lazy Days and Islands Waves, Barbados's first surf shop, opened in 1978. Since the mid-'80s, Barbados has hosted dozens of international surf contests, amateur and professional, including the Caribbean Cup and the Independence Pro. Steel-drum bands often play calypso music on the beach during contests. 

In 2012, Barbados was home to a handful of surf shops and several hundred local surfers. Thousands of visiting surfers fly in each year, mainly from America's East Coast. The Barbados surf has been featured in a small number of surf movies and videos, including
