Barnfield, is not easy to describe… Board builder, surfer, innovator, businessman, sailor, World Champion Mountain Biker, etc. An original member of the Lightning Bolt crew, leading into the pro surfing era, was on the ground floor of perfecting high performance equipment for Hawaii’s best surfers throughout the 70s and 80s. Born in 1948 on his grandparent's humble farm in tiny Cherry Valley, CA, Barnfield as a young child, first rode waves on an air mattress at Pismo Beach and was hooked. Eventually stand up surfing at Imperial Beach in the early 60s. Barnfield began shaping actively during the Short Board Revolution but always a drifting soul surfer, he headed north to Santa Barbara eventually dropping out in Oregon before hitting the North Shore where he quickly made a name for himself at Pipeline via Wilkings iconic “Late Take Off” Surfer Magazine Poster. Was technical consultant for Gregory Harrison playing the Chandler character in the 80s cult movie "

took extreme heat for creating ProGlass, his fully legal,state of the art, surfboard factory in downtown Haleiwa, where he still creates by his own hands creates exquisite boards for a select customers, just like he has always done for 50+ years. With his wife of 45 years, operates "Raging Isle" his influential retail store in Haleiwa.

Analytical and meticulous surfboard shaper from Oahu, Hawaii, best known for his North Shore guns in the 1970s and early 1980s. Barnfield was born (1948) in Cherry Valley, California, began surfing at age 12, moved to Southern California in 1967, and shaped his first board early the following year. Over the next four years Barnfield spent time in Oregon (founding Evergreen Surfboards), Hawaii (es- tablishing himself as a first-rate surfer at Pipeline), and Santa Barbara (where he helped nascent boardmaker Al Merrick get his company up and running). In 1973 he signed on at Lightning Bolt Surfboards in Hawaii. As a Bolt shaper, and later under his own Bill Barnfield Performance label, he made boards for dozens of top surfers, including world champions Shaun Tomson, Margo Oberg, Tom Carroll, and Tom Curren. Barnfield kept detailed measurements for all the boards he shaped, and was the first American shaper, beginning in 1983, to log board information into a computer. Although he was sometimes presented as a salty-haired boardmaking oracle—a favorite surf media archetype for shapers—surfboards in fact appeared to Barnfield as manifestations of applied formulae. "A surfboard's rocker," he said in 1980, "is like a section of a spiral which, mathematically, should be adjustable to fit various needs. I work to give my boards coherency." From 1983 to 1985, Barnfield wrote "Builder's Emporium," a monthly column for 

 magazine on board materials and board-building technique. In 1987, he opened Pro-glass, the North Shore's first city-approved surfboard factory, and in so doing became something of a pariah to dozens of local under-the-table, cash-and-carry boardmakers. Barnfield opened the Raging Isle surf shop in Haleiwa shortly after, where as of 2012, he continues to make and sell surfboards and surfboard fins.
