Hugely popular and frequently mocked television series, airing from 1989 to 2001, about the loves and adventures of a skin-baring crew of Los Angeles County lifeguards stationed in Malibu. 

 starred David Hasselhoff as Lt. Mitch Bucannon, with a supporting cast that included sexpot pinup girl Pamela Anderson. 

 debuted on NBC, was canceled after its first full season, then revived in 1991 for the first-run syndication market. It went on to become the world's most popular TV show, with nearly 2.5 billion weekly viewers in 140 countries tuning in by the late 1990s. The show's surfing connections were slight (the son of the lead character is named Hobie, presumably after pioneering surfboard manufacturer Hobie Alter; Hollywood tough guy and longtime Malibu surfer Richard Jaeckel played an aging lifeguard during the show's early years) with one notable exception: Jimmy Slade, the Malibu High surfer character introduced in 1992, was played by just-crowned world champion Kelly Slater from Florida. In his debut, Slater takes on a rowdy gang of surfers called the Tequila Shooters, who temporarily slow him down by running a submerged length of barbed wire in the surf zone and pulling it tight as he rides past. Slater's 

 participation didn't go over well with most surfers, including Hawaiian big-wave rider Brock Little, who said it was "an embarrassment to the sport. " Slater left 

 in late 1993, after appearing in 10 episodes over two seasons. A few months later he was romantically linked with Pamela Anderson, then still married to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, the father to her two children. 

, with Hasselhoff's Bucannon moonlighting as a private detective, aired from 1995 to 1997.
