Annual Polynesian-flavored surfing festival/competition held in early summer in Biarritz, a French Basque country resort town located near the Spanish border; created in 1993 by local events promoter Robert Rabagny. The International Longboard Classic, a qualifying event for the professional World Longboard Tour, is the main attraction of the weeklong Biarritz Surf Festival; other surf-related festival attractions include tandem exhibitions, paddleboard races, outrigger canoe demonstrations, surf movies and videos, and live music (Toots and the Maytals performed in 2000; the Beach Boys in 2001). Juniors division long- and shortboard contests are also held, along with a European-only longboard contest. In 2000, former world champion Nat Young introduced an event in which 16 of the world's best longboarders competed on identical 10-foot molded boards. Equal parts competition and social event, the Biarritz Surf Festival attracts tens of thousands of spectators, and attendees over the years have included surf world icons like Rell Sunn, Greg Noll, and Peter Cole, along with longboard pros like Joel Tudor, Beau Young, Colin McPhillips, and Bonga Perkins.
