Quadriplegic surfer and motivational speaker from Pacific Palisades, California; founder of Life Rolls On, a spinal cord research and adaptive action sports program. Billauer was born (1979) in Culver City, California, started riding waves at age nine, and by his teenage years was a succesful junior circuit competitor, making 

 magazine's 1996 "Hot 100" list of up-and-comers. 

While driving to school in October of 1995, Billauer's car was broadsided, throwing him through the driver's side window. "Please don't let me be paralyzed," Billauer said to his family after arriving at the hospital, "I would rather be dead." He left the hospital with minor injuries and resumed surfing. 

On March 25 1996, five months after his car accident scare, Billauer was surfing Zuma Beach near Malibu when he was pitched headfirst onto a shallow sandbar, broke his neck, and was instantly paralyzed from the chest down, arms included. Four years later Billauer returned to the water, and learned to ride waves while strapped to a longboard in prone position. Though not able to catch waves on his own, while propped on his elbows he was able to lean with his shoulders, and trim and angle across the wave face. 

In 2001, Billauer began working with They Will Surf Again, an organization devoted to putting surfing back in the lives of catastrophically injured surfers, and in 2002 he founded Life Rolls On, a nonprofit dedicated to helping paralyzed action sports enthusiasts return to their pursuits. The two associations merged in 2004, and formed the ancillary programs They Will Skate Again and They Will Ski Again. 

, a documentary on Billauer's life before and after his injury was released to critical acclaim in 2009. A successful motivational speaker since the mid 2000s, Billauer has been awarded Nike's Casey Martin Award and the Malibu Surfing Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.
