Surfing in the Black Sea, depending on how you define "surfing", goes back much further than 1970. At Rumeli Feneri, a heavily localised spot on the southern shore, fishermen have been bodysurfing for generations. They call it "Viya", which just means "wave" if I remember correctly. On a hot midsummer afternoon in 2012, I missed visiting Rumeli Feneri by about 5 miles, bodysurfing some small beachbreak waves at another village to the west of it. Back then I haven't heard of Viya yet. See here:

Landlocked body of water located in southeast Europe, eight times bigger than Lake Michigan, bordered by Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania; connected to the Atlantic via the Bosporus, Sea of Marmara, and the Mediterranean Sea. Named after the heavy winter fog that makes it appear dark, the Black Sea is lined with pleasant sandy beaches and upscale summer vacation resorts, particularly in the north; sailing and sailboarding are popular, and rental surfboards are available—probably for paddling. "I could have been the first man to surf the Black Sea," author/surfer William Finnegan wrote in his 1999 "Black Sea Blues" article for the 

, going on to describe "brown, misty, mediocre, blown-out waves dribbling in from the general direction of Odessa." It was 1970; Finnegan was a heartbroken 17-year-old bumming through Europe, and instead of surfing he "turned and trudged inland and had a little nervous breakdown." Little is known about surf conditions in the Black Sea. Powerful storms are common here during the winter, however, and with 700-mile east-to-west fetch, it's easy to imagine ridable waves as big as six feet moving into dozens of cold and dimly lit Black Sea beaches and points. . He found tiny waves, good food, and a total lack of interest in ocean-based recreation among the locals. In 2011, Red Bull sent a team of surfers including Hawaii's Ian Walsh, Australian Perth Standlick, and Panama's Gary Saavedra on a wave-finding mission in Bulgaria, Turkey, and to the Caspian Sea beaches of Azerbaijan. The group ran into a small crew of local Bulgarian surfers, a brother duo who opened Turkey's first surf camp, and rode small, wind-whipped surf in both seas. A film based on the voyage,
