Rubber-limbed alternative board-riding pro surfer and free-thinking surfboard shaper from Encinitas, California; “He is the first truly post-modern surfer, a talent that combines every generation of surfing that’s come before him, often on a single wave,” said Stab Magazine’s Jed Smith in 2015.

Burch was born (1989) in Oceanside, California, and began surfing with his father as a grade schooler. Through his teenage years, Burch was a promising amateur competitor, regularly placing well in NSSA events.

But by his early 20s, the beanpole-thin goofyfoot had traded in his contest singlet for a self-shaped longboard. Within five years, Burch had emerged as a leading figure in a backyard-shaping, DIY surfcraft movement, buoyed at least in part by his role in 

, a lo-fi surf movie hit directed by Cyrus Sutton in 2010. In the years immediately following 

’s release, videos of Burch riding everything from old-school twin-keeled fishes to unglassed, finless chunks of raw closed-cell foam erupted all over the Internet.

Burch’s interest in experimentation made him a standout in the shaping community too. After apprenticing with San Diego’s longtime assymetrical surfboard design guru Carl Ekstrom, Burch began carving assymetircal boards of his own; wicked-looking, carbon-railed, fork-nosed boards that looked as though they’d arrived from a distant, formula-one inspired surfing future. “His boards have solved a lot of problems in conventional high performance boards,” said surf historian Richard Kenvin in 2016. “I don’t know if his asymmetrical boards will ever crack the market, but they should.”

 earned him a “Best Performance” nomination in the Surfer Poll Awards. In addition to
