Dry, hilly, cactus-filled region located at the tip of Baja California, Mexico; packed on one end with hotels, resorts, and restaurants; fringed throughout with a generous assortment of warm-water surf breaks. As it appears on a map, the overdeveloped resort town of Cabo San Lucas is found on Baja's southwest corner; as defined in the surf world, "Cabo" refers to a roughly 50-mile, 20-surf-break stretch of coastline beginning at Cabo San Lucas and extending northeast, past the town of San Jose del Cabo and into the mouth of the Gulf of California. 

Cabo receives its best waves—generally ranging from three to six feet—during the June-to-October North Pacific hurricane season; long-distance swells also roll in occasionally from South Pacific storms. With the notable exception of the Estuary, a tubing San Jose del Cabo beachbreak, Cabo surf spots are for almost all rippable point- and reefbreaks. 

Zippers and Shipwrecks are the area's best-known surf spots (Zippers, located just off the highway in San Jose del Cabo, is also by far the most crowded, with territorial locals sometimes harassing visiting Americans); while Boca del Tule and Punta Perfecto, to the northeast, on rare occasion produce exquisite high-performance waves. The daytime summer air temperature is often in the upper 90s or low 100s; the water temperature can reach 80.

California surfer Steve Bigler flew into San Jose del Cabo to shoot footage for 

, a 1968 surf film, but it was years before the area became popular with surfers. In "The Tip," a 1980 

 magazine photo feature, Cabo is presented as a near-virgin surf destination. By the mid-'80s, however, it had earned a reputation among American surfers for consistently fun waves and for the consistently raucous Cabo San Lucas tourista nightlife. 

Representatives from the California-based Surf Industry Manufacturers Association have traveled to Cabo since 1998 for an annual weekend-long seminar and booze-up. Regional and American-sponsored surf contests have been held here as well, most notably the 1991 Fletcher Los Cabos Classic, won by six-time world champion Kelly Slater, and the 2002 World Longboard Championships, won by Colin McPhillips. 

Cabo is featured in a small number of surf films, including 

 (2011). A few notable American surfers have retired in Cabo, including big-wave pioneer Pat Curren and 1968 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational winner Mike Doyle.
