Rugged, isolated, rarely surfed African nation composed of 10 main islands and five islets, located 400 miles west of Senegal, in the Atlantic Ocean. "This one is as down and dirty as they come," reported 

 after a 1993 visit to the Cape Verde Islands, in an article that described some of the world's most depressed living conditions, as well as surf breaking up to 15 to 18 feet. 

Cape Verde's volcanic origins are all too obvious, as the islands are almost completely without beaches, and virtually every surf spot breaks over a lava-rock bottom. From November to April, low-pressure storm systems in the North Atlantic funnel waves directly into the subtropical and frequently windy Cape Verde waters; Sal Island, in the northeast, has a number of temperamental but world-class pointbreaks, including Ponto Grande and Ponto Alcol. 

The islands have no surf industry and no native surfers; little is known about when these notoriously powerful waves were first ridden or by whom. Sailboarders and kiteboarders, along with a small number of surfers, have begun visiting the Cape Verde Islands. The Cape Verde surf is detailed in
