Mountainous semi-tropical Caribbean nation forming the eastern half of Hispaniola; 75 miles west of Puerto Rico, 350 miles north of Venezuela. The Dominican Republic, second-largest nation in the Caribbean in area and population, has a huge amount of surfing potential. 

The months of November through April provide the most consistent surf with spots along the reef-fringed northern coasts occasionally breaking at up to 15 feet. The southern, Caribbean coast is far calmer, and generally receives only windswell waves that max out around six feet—though hurricane season, July to October, can whip up short period swells approaching 10 feet. 

The Dominican Republic's most popular surf breaks are near the northern beach town of Cabarete, a popular wind and kitesurfing destination. Encuentro, a forgiving left-breaking reef, with a shorter, tubing right-hander on bigger swells, is the island's best known and most regularly ridden wave. Air and water temperatures in the Dominican Republic average in the pleasant mid-80s all year. Shallow coral reefs and urchins are the main surfing hazards.

First surfed by visiting Californians in the 1960s, crowds are nevertheless rarely a factor at Dominican Republic surf spots, with the country's 345 mile long border with Haiti a turnoff for many travelers. A handful of professional surfers make the Dominican Republic their home, and the country fields a surf team for the ISA World Surfing Games. Many historians think that the remains of Christopher Columbus—who once called Hispaniola "the most pleasant place on earth—lie buried beneath the cathedral at Ciudad Trujillo.
