A complete or near-complete absence of surf. "Dead flat" is used for added emphasis. A "flat spell" is when the surf is down for some lengthy but indefinite period of time, usually at least a few days. As applied to a wave, a "flat spot" or "flat section" occurs when the wave moves into deeper water, slows down, levels out, and becomes less powerful....
