Matt - great roundup of games! I thought the artwork for Ride the Surf was Griffin at first, but the more I looked at it the more I thought it had John’s touches when he did “Rick-like” figures and such. But your description has me on the fence (grin).

By the way - I hate you. Now I have to find all of those vintage games just on principle. I can’t find a single sign of Tubular Pursuit, Shoot the Curl or Surf Bored…apparently those will take some time to dig up. Surfing games and toys have been a small, sometimes fun, and generally unprofitable part of the sport since 1962, with the introduction of Ride the Surf, a dice-and-board game illustrated by "Murphy" cartoon-strip creator Rick Griffin. Board games to follow included Surf's Up (introduced in 1979), Surf Trip (1989), and Tubular Pursuit (1998). Perhaps the best of the group was 1982's The Game of Surfing, where each player begins as a bewildered Iowa tourist at Goonlight Beach, then races to become the first Super Kahuna, dodging sharks, closeout waves, and unruly locals, and ad- vancing with TV appearances, tuberides, and competition wins. Nonboard surfing games include the marble-based Shoot the Curl (1989); Mattel's Wipe-Out (1993), with each player racing his "awesome surfin' dude" statuette down a plastic tower just ahead of a slow-moving "wave" of viscous green slime; and Surf Bored (1998), a cheekily illustrated Australian-produced card game based on the pro surfing tour, with contestants trying to steal sponsorships from each other and rack up contest wins. The Japanese-produced Surferboy (1982) was the first video surfing game, a handheld two-button de- vice, with points scored as the player maneuvers an LCD-screen surfer past sharks, rocks, and other surfers. The joystick-controlled Surfer Video Game (1985), made in California, sold as a diskette for the Commodore 64 PC, and featured 16 different wave conditions and 10 levels of difficulty. The Waterless Surfing Machine (1986) used the same programming and graphics as Surfer Video, but the player controlled the on-screen rider by actually maneuvering a surfboard bolted to a floor-mounted sensor device. (A Queensland surfer developed a mechanical surfboard two years later, similar to the mechanical bull made popular in the 1980 film Urban Cowboy; world pro tour champion Tom Curren was unable to stay atop the board for more than 18 seconds.) SurfRiders (1998), made for Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64, was the first modern surf video game; five more were released in the early '00s: Surfing H30 (for Sony PlayStation 2), Championship Surfer (by Mattel, for Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation, and Windows), TransWorld Surf 2001 (for Microsoft's X-Box, Play- Station 2, and Nintendo GameCube), Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer (PlayStation 2 and an X-Box version developed by the same company that produced the best-selling Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series), and Sunny Garcia Surfing (PlayStation 2). In TransWorld Surf 2001, described in a Los Angeles Times review as "the first surfing game that is actually fun to play," each contestant not only has to complete a virtual photo shoot before going surfing, but has to monitor his or her "karma" gauge—if it gets too low, the surfer be- comes unwelcome at new beaches. Meanwhile, the Topological Slide, the first virtual reality "surfing ex- perience," was introduced in Canada in 1993: an art exhibit of sorts rather than a game, the "surfer" wore an enclosed wire-connected helmet and stood on a motion-sensor disk, then "rode" across an endless wave-shaped field made up of color-shaded polygons. Kuta Brown, the first scale-model remote-control surfer, was introduced in 1991. "Recommended for use in waves from one inch to two feet," the packag- ing text instructed. "In four-foot-or-bigger surf, Kuta Brown doesn't carve as well, and you should be out surfing anyway." At least three other remote-control surfers were manufactured over the next 10 years, including Radio Shack's Surf Monster, released in 2001. Surf magazines have over the years occasionally published surfing crossword puzzles and surf trivia quizzes. "Doctor Dume's Annual Trivia Quiz," a Surfer feature from 1986 to 1990, rewarded surf knowledge—but only to a point. In the answer box at the end of the 1989 Dr. Dume quiz, a 75 score is "Right where you want to be. You surf and you know a little trivia." A perfect 100 is rated as "Disgusting. Trivia is your life; your life is trivial."
