Postal worker from Queensland, Australia, who at age 22 steamrolled the world's best pro surfers to win the 1980 Stubbies Pro contest, held in beautiful six-foot surf at Harris's home break of Burleigh Heads. 

Harris was born (1958) in Brisbane, and began surfing at age seven. The Stubbies was his first pro contest, and he gained entry at the last minute when one of the seeded surfers went missing. The easygoing local was defeated in his first match and had to fight his way up through the losers' rounds, defeating Cheyne Horan and Buzzy Kerbox, among others, on his way to a final heat against Hawaiian Dane Kealoha; the win paid $10,000 in cash and prizes. 

Harris, a rangy regularfooter, never won another international pro contest, but on the strength of his Stubbies victory finished the 1980 season ranked 15th in the world.
