Loosely organized club located on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, put together in 1975, according to cofounder Eddie Rothman, because there were "too many people from too many places" visiting and not showing enough respect for local wave-riders. The club's full name is Hui O He'i Nalu (Club of Wave Sliders; no relation to Hui Nalu, the club Duke Kahanamoku cofounded in Waikiki in 1911). From the beginning, the Hui had a reputation for heavy-handedness, even thuggery. When 1978 world champion Wayne Bartholomew of Australia was publicly beaten at Sunset Beach by a group of resident surfers in 1976, after bragging to the surf press about his country's prowess in the big Hawaiian surf, it was understood to be the work of the Hui—also known as the Black Shorts, for the black surf trunks that served as the club's uniform. Whether or not the group deserved its underworld reputation is another matter. "Some of the members have been in trouble here and there," Rothman acknowledged to Australia's Surfing Life magazine in 1997. "But the club has never been any extortion ring, or into drug dealing or anything like that." Beginning in the late '70s, the Hui was hired as the "water patrol" for the North Shore pro contests (a service not required anywhere else on tour), and in 1995, a spinoff surfwear company called Da Hui was formed. Da Hui sponsored a series of professional surf contests in Hawaii, the best known being the Backdoor Shootout, held at Backdoor Pipeline in 1996, 1997, and 1999. The original club, according to the Da Hui Web site, is now "more family and community oriented." But visiting surfers, as they have for decades, still give black-short-wearing locals a wide berth. "When I go out and surf," Rothman said in 1997, "don't bother me, don't bother my kids, don't bother the other kids around here. Just stay out of the way." Asked about the Hui membership process, Rothman added, "I think membership is closed right now."
