Braking maneuver in which the surfer shifts his weight to the rear foot and momentarily lifts the nose of the board. Shortboarders occasionally use the kick-stall to slow down for a tube section, but in general it's a longboard maneuver, performed in small- to medium-size waves, often as a way to set up a noseride.
