Annual pro-am contest held in late autumn at Sebastian Inlet, Florida. The Quiksilver-sponsored King of the Peak was created in 1995 by former world tour pro and longtime Sebastian kingpin Matt Kechele, along with reigning world tour champion Kelly Slater, partly as a fundraiser for Cocoa Beach High School, both surfers' alma mater. The "Peak" in the contest title refers to "First Peak," the wedging section adjacent to the Sebastian Inlet's north jetty. The debut King of the Peak competition had 103 entrants and a $4,000 prize purse; a side-show event was held where Slater, for six consecutive 20-minute/six-man heats, took on anybody willing to pony up the $25 entry fee—all proceeds going to Cocoa Beach High. Slater double-interfered in one of the heats, but won the rest; he also went on to win the King of the Peak main event. The follow-up contest was cancelled due to bad surf, then in 1997 it returned as a man-on-man "skins" competition, where at any point in a given heat a surfer can raise his hands and "claim" what he hopes will be the heat's best wave. He then leaves the water and waits to see if his opponent, during the heat's remaining minutes, will better his score. Money is awarded to the winner of each heat, rather than at the end of the contest; the winning surfer gets a "skin," and advances to the next round. A sec- ond round is held, with all competitors back in ac- tion, and the surfer with the most accumulated skins over both rounds is declared the winner. Nearly all King of the Peak entrants are from Florida, and the event has unsurprisingly been dominated by Sebas- tian Inlet locals. The 2004 event had 96 entrants and a $12,250 purse.
