Husky blond surf travel entrepreneur from Sydney, Australia; founder in 1987 of the Surf Travel Company, a boat charter service best known for its routes up and down the wave-rich Indonesian island chain. 

King was born (1958) and raised near the beachside Sydney suburb of Cronulla, and began surfing in 1970. He made his first visit to Java's soon-to-be-famous Grajagan surf camp in the early '80s, during a vacation from his entry-level job as a computer engineer in Sydney. In 1985 he began working full-time on surf travel, running his own boat out of Bali and making fantastic surf discoveries (including the King-christened Supersuck and Periscopes) on the coasts of nearby Lombok and Sumbawa. 

By the mid-'90s, the Cronulla-based Surf Travel Company was running boat tours through the Mentawai island chain off the coast of Sumatra; at the peak of the surf season, King would have as many as 11 charters running at once, using both company-owned boats as well as hired boats, with the average trip lasting 12 days and carrying 10 surfers. (The Surf Travel Company also had boats operating in Samoa, the Maldives, Tonga, New Caladonia, and other locations.) 

King has been damned as exploitative by surf adventure purists, but made wealthy by thousands of appreciative surfers who might otherwise have never seen or ridden Indonesia's remote but dependably perfect waves. As the Mentawais began to attract other tour operators, most notably Australians Rick Cameron and Martin Daly, the political and marketing clashes between charter companies grew vicious, if not quite dangerous. 

By the early '00s, however, King seemed to emerge on top, and was saluted in "Loaded: Ten Surfing Millionaires," a 2001 Australia's Surfing Life magazine feature article. But King seemed ambivalent about his success. "Now here I am," he wrote at the time, "back in the office behind a desk, arranging for surfers to live the dream I once envisioned for myself."
