Annual men's-only surfing competition for former world tour pros age 36 and over; founded in 1997 as the Oxbow Masters. Similar events had been staged as far back as 1982, when Peter Drouyn won the legends event of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Australia, beating Nat Young, Midget Farrelly, and Wayne Lynch. In 1987, Hawaiian surfer Hans Hedemann won the $40,000 Stubbies Masters, for surfers 27 and over. The Masters World Championships, sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals, is the first ongoing event of its kind. Twenty-four surfers attended the debut 1997 Masters, including former world champions Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson, and Wayne Bartholomew, and pro tour standouts Ian Cairns, Cheyne Horan, Dane Kealoha, Simon Anderson, and Wayne Lynch. The weeklong $50,000 event was held in churning six to eight-foot surf at Fiji's Cloudbreak, and Australian Terry Richardson defeated Michael Ho of Hawaii to win the $7,000 first-place check. In 1998 the contest was moved to Puerto Escondido, Mexico, where the veterans (including Nat Young and Reno Abellira) again faced the somewhat daunting task of riding hollow eight-footers. While all ages had competed in a single division in 1997, this time the competitors were divided into two groups: Masters (36–40) and Grandmasters (over 40). Quiksilver Europe took over as event sponsor in 1999, inflated the name of the event to the Quiksilver Silver Edition Masters World Championships, lowered the age limit to 35, and moved the contest to the French Basque coast. Rob Buchanan, covering the event for Outside magazine, noted a division of sorts among the Masters contestants, between the "guys with the mortgages and haircuts and good jobs" and the "seekers, slackers and free spirits." The Masters division was changed to include surfers from 35 to 43, while Grandmasters was raised to age 44 and over.
