Light-footed American surfer from New Smyrna Beach, Florida; winner of the 1974 United States Surfing Championships, and the only woman to compete regularly against men on the East Coast pro tour. McLaughlin was born (1957) in Daytona Beach, raised in New Smyrna, and began surfing at age 14. 

In 1974 she won the Florida State Championships, the East Coast Championships, and the United States Championships, then all but vanished from the surf scene while earning a B.A. in biology from the University of Central Florida and a master's in education from Nova University. 

McLaughlin returned to competition in 1981, testing her speedy, low-crouch style on the all-male East Coast pro tour, and finished the 1982 season ranked 22nd. The following year, while working full-time as a teacher at New Smyrna High School, she placed ninth in the hotly contested Sundek Classic, held at Florida's Melbourne Beach. 

Interviewed by Eastern Surf Magazine in 1994, McLaughlin said she didn't mind hustling waves in the overcrowded New Smyrna lineup, but admitted that her comfort level was aided by a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do.
