Military-ruled country in tropical Southeast Asia, located in the Bay of Bengal, surrounded by Thailand, Laos, China, India, and Bangladesh. Myanmar, formerly called Burma, came to the surf world's attention in 2001, when the Surfer's Journal published "On the Edge of Burma," documenting a short visit made by American surfers Randy Rarick and Tor Johnson, who endured 16 separate tear-apart luggage searches but also found some small but well-shaped waves peeling off the nearshore islands adjacent to Gwa, about 150 miles north of Pagada Point. 

Myanmar has three distinct seasons: the May-to-October wet season, which produces nearly 200 inches of rainfall; the cool months from October to February, when temperatures drop to the high 60s; and the hot season, February to May, when temperatures often hit 100. 

Sea temperatures range from the mid-70s to the low 80s. Indian Ocean storms push small- to medium-sized surf into the Bay of Bengal throughout the year, with the biggest and best waves usually arriving between March and June. 

Myanmar's exotic 1,650-mile coastline, decorated with hundreds of gilded pagodas, remains almost entirely uncharted for surf breaks. "We only saw a tiny portion of Burma, mystical and backward, full of gracious people and despotism," Johnson wrote in his Surfer's Journal article. "It's also got some good surf. I'll go back, if they'll give me a visa."
