Night surfing goes back nearly as far as modern surfing itself. Honolulu surf booster Alexander Hume Ford, in his 1909 Collier's magazine article "Riding the Surf in Hawaii," describes a feature of the annual Waikiki beachside carnival, in which surfers fasten acetylene lamps to their boards and then go in the late evening "to ride the breakers in a circle of light." Night surfing is usually done under the light of a full moon, at easy-to-read breaks that are prohibitively crowded during the day. Malibu, Rincon, and Trestles, all California pointbreaks, are thought to be the three most popular night surfing locations. Young surfers around the world will sometimes peel away from a beach party, especially in warmer weather, for a drunken round of night surfing. (Hawaii's Jock Sutherland became a night surfing legend by riding 20-footers at Waimea Bay long past sundown while high on an extra-large dose of Orange Sunshine LSD.) Reduced visibility makes judging incoming waves difficult, and the night surfer depends as much on "feel" as on the usual sight cues—turns and cutbacks will generally be toned down. The sense of speed, meanwhile, is greatly amplified compared to daytime surfing. Apart from the satisfaction of riding without a crowd, night surfing has its own moody if slightly ominous charm, particularly when the red tide outlines each breaking wave with a blue-green phosphorescence. Collisions between riding and paddling surfers are night surfing's biggest hazard; night surfers should regularly make their position known with shouts, whistles, or yells. Efforts are sometimes made to use artificial lights for night surfing. Riders in Huntington Beach, California, have for decades been surfing by the lamppost light of the municipal pier, and in 1967 the city adjusted the wattage and light angle for improved visibility in the water. In 1972, a California company introduced Nite-Lites, a nylon belt with two hip- mounted waterproof battery-powered lights. Portions of the 1984 Beaurepaire's Open, a world pro tour event held in Sydney, Australia, were run under huge crane-raised floodlights, in front of more than 30,000 spectators. The waves at Arpoador beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are currently lit by stadium- style floodlights.
