Series of quirky inland surfing breaks in northern Brazil created as an incoming tidal surge runs up the various tributaries of the Amazon River, forming waves over shallow sandbanks. The name "Pororoca" comes from the native Tupi Indian dialect and means "great noise." The mud-colored river surf is in fact dangerous; a ship belonging to French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau was sunk by a wave during a Pororoca field expedition in 1984. Other dangers include uprooted trees swirling in the wave zone and wildlife that includes alligators, anacondas, piranhas, and the dreaded candiru, a tiny fish that can swim up the human penis and lodge its spiny fins so firmly in the walls of the urethra that removal usually requires amputation. The Pororoca wave comes into full form just a few times each season, during the February and March full moon low tides, and is ridable in numerous spots, up to 120 miles from the ocean. The two most frequently ridden Pororoca breaks are Rio Araguari, first surfed in 1997 by Brazilians Noelio Sobrinho and Gilvandro Junior, which can get up to six foot and is the most dangerous wave in the region, and Rio Guama, a more accessible wave and the site of the 1999-founded Pororoca Surf Championships. Brazilian surfer Eraldo Gueiros rode a Pororoca wave in 2000 for a leg-numbing 17 minutes—a record for this particular tidal bore. The Pororoca has been featured in Surfer and Surfer's Journal magazine articles, and in 2002 was the subject of a National Public Radio report. See also: Severn Bore, tidal bore waves.
