America's first domestic professional surfing tour, formed in late 1984 by San Diego County surfer Joey Buran to serve as an intermediary step between amateur competition and the pro world circuit. While the 23-year-old Buran—a top-rated world tour pro and winner of the 1984 Pipeline Masters— drew up an ambitious schedule for the opening Professional Surfing Association of America (PSAA) season, with stops on the East Coast, the Gulf Coast, and Hawaii, it turned out that all 19 events took place in California. Prize money for the entire season was just under $50,000; central California surfer John Parmenter and Jorja Smith were the year-end champions. In 1986, Buran sold the PSAA to Dive N' Surf, owners of Body Glove wetsuits, the tour was pared down to six events, and the women's division was canceled. Buran stayed on as executive director, but resigned in midsummer after being hospitalized following a tour-related emotional breakdown. At the end of the 1986 season, Dive N' Surf brought Budweiser on as the PSAA umbrella sponsor ($370,000 for three years, tripling the prize money); while the tour was now officially known as the Budweiser United States Professional Surfing Tour, it was still administered by the PSAA. The 1987 tour featured contests in Hawaii and the East Coast, and bigger prize purses attracted some of the world's top pros. In 1988, cable sports network Prime Ticket signed a five- year, 50-event deal with Meistrell Sports Productions (a division of Dive N' Surf) to cover the PSAA/Bud Tour contests, and by 1990, with a $500,000 annual prize purse, regular nationwide television event coverage, and a group of young pros that included future world-beaters Kelly Slater, Shane Beschen, Taylor Knox, and Rob Machado, the PSAA/Bud Tour set a domestic pro circuit standard that hasn't yet been matched. In 1993, Meistrell Sports Productions sold the PSAA/Bud Tour to Prime Ticket, who then hired Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) founder Ian Cairns to direct the contests. The next five years brought a succession of primary sponsors, and each name change (Bud Tour to the Clarion Surf Tour to the Panasonic Shockwave Tour) was accompanied by a decreasing number of events and competitor interest. (The women's division, however, returned in 1995.) By the end of 1998, all remnants of the PSAA tour were extinguished. The Professional Surfing Tour of America, and the Foster's Pro Surfing Tour, launched in 1999 and 2002, respectively, have both tried to restore the American competitive vigor once found in the PSAA.
