Tear-shaped tropical island nation in the Indian Ocean, about 270 miles long and 140 miles wide, located 20 miles off the southeast coast of India; formerly known as Ceylon. California's Rusty Miller, the 1965 United States Surfing Association champion, visited Sri Lanka in 1964, rode some "clear, glassy three-foot waves" near the southwest town of Kalutara, and described the setting as "a true Shangri-La for surfers." The American surf audience got its first look at Sri Lanka in a 1968 Petersen's Surf- ing magazine article titled "India and Ceylon's Forbidden Waters." Although Sri Lanka has been riven by civil war since 1983, surfing has nonetheless become increasingly popular. A 1993 issue of the Surf Report charted 19 surf breaks in the southern part of the country (much of the rest of Sri Lanka's 1,000-mile coastline is unsuitable for surfing), and notes the "warm water, cheap accommodations, and a laid- back lifestyle." Arugam Bay and Hikkaduwa are Sri Lanka's two most popular surfing spots: Arugam, a beachbreak in the southeast, generally has the best surf during the May-to-October monsoon season; Hikkaduwa, a pointbreak in the southwest adjacent to a holiday town, is best from November to April. Hikkaduwa is also the center of Sri Lanka's budding surf industry, which includes a surf shop and surf tour company. In 2001, Hikkaduwa was the location for the first annual Sri Lanka Airlines Cup, an inter- national pro contest—an Israeli won the event; the remaining finalists were from Japan, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka. As of 2003, there were two surf shops and about 150 native surfers in Sri Lanka.
