Buzzy Trent, and collectors: a Buzzy Trent gun, shaped by Brewer, sold at auction in '07 (check) for 33K (Longboard 15-5-14) ADD: HONOLULU - (July 25, 2011) -- The sixth biennial Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection, took place in Honolulu on Saturday with $650,000 in vintage surfboards and memorabilia changing hands before a capacity crowd at the Blaisdell Center. A new auction item record was set: $41,000 for a 1920, 9'0" John Kelly redwood plank. It sold to a buyer from Connecticut, USA. Hawaii's premier auctioneer Joe Teipel effectively managed live online bids from around the world with more than 200 bidders who turned out in person. Other high-fetching surfboards of the night included: - $30,000 Gerry Lopez 'Big Wednesday' Lightning Bolt - $24,000 1934 Pacific Systems Homes 'Swastika' model - $24,000 Pat Curren/Yater 'gun' from 1963 - $20,000 Greg Noll 'Da Cat' model from 1963 Over the past 10 years, Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction curator Randy Rarick has found new owners for hundreds of items that bring total sales for all six auctions to $3.2million. "The 6th edition of the auction was without doubt the most successful ever," says Rarick. "Even though we limited the main auction to only 70 items this year, they fetched record numbers. * * * In 1996, Southern California surfboard fiberglasser Danny Brawner auctioned off his personal collection of '50s- and '60s-era longboards— more than 100 boards total—and grossed $117,000. The auction idea caught on, and six months later jovial surf entrepreneur Allan Seymour staged the first Pacific Coast Vintage Surf Auction (PCVSA), held at the Countryside Inn in San Clemente, California. Items for sale included vintage surf magazines, books, prints, posters, and Hawaiian silk shirts; a Duke Ka- hanamoku Invitational trophy sold for $1,500, a first edition of Tom Blake's 1935 book Hawaiian Surfriders went for $950, and a Hawaiian redwood-pine laminate plank surfboard from the '20s brought $7,500. The PCVSA moved to a banquet room in the San Diego Marriott Hotel in 1998, then to the Long Beach Convention Center, where it has been held annually during the first week in February, as an adjunct to the Action Sports Retailer Trade Expo. The one-day event is divided into two parts: about 30 less-expensive items, or "lots," are put up for silent auction in the late afternoon, with all comers welcome to bid. In the evening, authorized bidders, after paying a $25 registration free, make offers on about 100 premium lots, with Seymour serving as host and auctioneer. As of 2002, the highest-priced item sold at a Pacific Coast Vintage Surf Auction was a Simmons "sandwich" balsa board, which went for $18,500 in 2000. Other surf world auctions include the Hawaii Islands Vintage Surf Auction, developed by world pro tour cofounder Randy Rarick, and the Sydney Surf Auction, run by Australian surf magazine and memorabilia collector Michael Mock. Both debuted in 2001. New Jersey surfer Mike "Miggs" Migliorisi hosted the debut Premier Auction in 1999, where a late-'50s Greg Noll Surfboards balsa sold for $13,000. A surfing auction Web site, www.surfnhula.com, went online in 2002. Not everybody was happy with how the sport's history was being bought, sold, and collected. "Surfing's past is shacked up in a posh hotel in San Diego," surf journalist Paul Gross wrote after attending the 1998 PCVSA, "with a generation of aging enthusiasts who were willing to pay for it, and together they cultivated a subculture which was wholly unfamiliar to me. In this lineup, what mattered wasn't how deep in the pocket you surfed, but how deep your pockets were when you bid." See also surf collectors.
