ADD collectors, collections: Severson bought Cooper collection of boards for $300, including a Simmons, a Pacific Homes Systems board; worth tens of thousands by late '80s. (Surfer 50-4-32) Collectors have wanted to own a part of surfing for decades. A short item in a 1974 issue of Surfer magazine noted that California surfer Nathan Parrish was selling a pristine 1966 World Surfing Championships event program to the highest bidder (no follow-up as to what the winning bid was), while Surfing, a few months later, named "paper" collectors Richard Safady and Mark Fragale as the top two finishers of the Magazine Freak Awards; Safady, a longshoreman from Hermosa Beach, California, had been collecting surf magazines and memorabilia since the late '50s. In the early '90s, however, surf collecting began to transform into a more serious, expensive, and regimented hobby, and by the end of the decade items were no longer culled from garage sales and flea markets, but from auctions, specialty stores, and online trading posts. Driven for the most part by nostalgia-affected baby boom surfers looking for a connection to the sport's oft-cited but vaguely described "golden age" (best described as anything prior to the late '60s shortboard revolution), the boom in surfing collectibles was loud enough that a 2000 issue of the Financial Review listed surf memorabilia as one of America's top five collectible investments. Wooden surfboards were thrown away by the thousands in the late '50s and '60s; those that survived to the end of the century could be sold for anywhere between $1,000 and $18,000. Although not technically a surfing item, the loose-fitting aloha shirt (or Hawaiian shirt) set a precedent of sorts in the mid-'70s by gaining collectible currency in the fashion world. Surf music albums soon followed, with a 1981 Surfer article, "Turn Your Surf Music Into Gold!," notifying readers that mint condition Beach Boys albums were worth more than $200. Surfboard collectors began ratcheting up their prices a few years later, buying and selling Pipeliners, Trestles Specials, and other signal mid-'60s model surfboards for up to $600. California surf entrepreneur Allan Seymour, who in the mid-'80s organized the first surfing swap meets, took surf collecting to the next logical level in 1997, by staging the first-of-its-kind Pacific Coast Vintage Surf Auction featuring surfboards, surf mag- azines, posters, books, and other surf-related collectibles. Most collectors became specialists. British surfer Nick Cox filed and cataloged nearly 500 surf wax labels; Santa Monica surfer Lee Nichol collected about 150 mid- and late '60s boards, each featuring a floral design. One of the most valuable surfboard collections in the world is owned by the Hoffman family, headed by California surfing patriarchs Walter and Flippy Hoffman, and is thought to be worth about $350,000. (Not everybody was impressed by the growth or tenor of professional surf collecting. "Been a lot of talk about collector surfboards lately," Australian surf magazine editor Derek Rielly wrote in 1998. "So much so that I feel like grabbing an ax and driving its blade through their overpriced decks.") The Longboard Collectors Club was founded in Southern California in 1992; by the end of the decade the club had 147 members, and held regular meetings/board shows up and down the West Coast. In 2001, surfer and collector owner Mark Blackburn wrote Surf 's Up: Collecting the Longboard Era, a lush coffee-table book with photographs and estimated values for surfboards (a 1940 redwood hot curl is listed at $6,000 to $8,000), books and magazines ($1,200 to $1,800 for a first-edition copy of John "Doc" Ball's California Surfriders), decals and cloth patches ($60 to $90 for a green 1966 United States Surfing Association decal), and sundry surf-related effects and paraphernalia, including postcards, movie tickets, teacups, print ads, flyers, and booklets. Black- burn describes surfing in the book's introduction as one of life's "most pleasurable and spiritual experiences," and invites readers to pick up on the sport's "joy and Nirvana through the following pages" of his book.
