Monthly surf-travel newsletter published from 1980 to 1998 by Surfer magazine in San Juan Capistrano, California; conceptualized by Surfer publisher Steve Pezman; developed and produced by founding editor Rus Calisch. Each issue of the Surf Report was nearly identical in format. A surfing area was featured on the cover (usually a country, state, island or island group, or region), with mapped and detailed spot-by-spot information on the next few pages, followed in turn by summaries of the area's culture and history, transportation and accommodations, as well as typical wave and weather conditions. The Surf Report's text-heavy back pages contained short surf updates from around the world for the previous month, essays on wave formation and forecasting, classified ads, minifeatures on surfing areas, and condensed news items from the world of the traveling surfer. Each Surf Report was 10 or 12 pages long; black-and-white photographs were added to the design in 1997. The newsletters editorial voice was both knowledgeable and surfed out. "Slow, mellow righthander," a 1997 issue says of a break called Piddlies in the Maldive Islands. "Any swell over four- foot tends to mush it out." The Surf Report was available by subscription, but most surfers sent away for back issues ($3.00 per issue in 1980, $6.00 per issue today) once they had a destination in mind. Assembled from a single office within the Surfer magazine publishing complex, the Surf Report was an instant low-overhead success, embraced by traveling surfers. Like Bank Wright's 1973-published guidebook Surfing California, the Surf Report was also regarded by many surfers as nothing less than heretical, as it revealed, in just a few short pages, information that had taken local surfers years to accumulate. Along with all the familiar wave-riding domains—Hawaii, Australia, Indonesia, and mainland America—Surf Re- port cover features over the years included El Salvador, Congo, Okinawa, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Namibia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and Senegal. Calisch served as the Surf Report editor from 1980 to 1986, followed by Donna Oakley (1987 to 1996) and Chris Dixon (1996 to 1998). Four issues of the Surfer Travel Report, similar to the Surf Report and edited by Will Pennartz, were published in 1999, each focusing on a different region in California.
