Santa Cruz, California company specializing in the design and production of mass-produced, epoxy-based molded surfboards; founded in 1992 by longtime surfboard shaper and sailboard manufacturer Randy French. In 1978 French started the SeaTrend surfboard company and began manufacturing the AquaToy, an inexpensive Styrofoam board geared toward the beginner's market. The AquaToy tanked, but SeaTrend repositioned itself as a successful sailboard maker in the early 1980s, and eagerly embraced epoxy composites and molded construction techniques in their sailboard production, an industry far less-tradition bound than surfboard shaping. Machine-molded surfboards, as opposed to traditional hand-built boards, had been experimented with since at least the early 1960s, but, fairly or not, disparaged for poor build quality and awkward riding characteristics, these "popouts" failed to garner much interest within the surfing community. Drawing on his successes with SeaTrend, French launched Surftech in 1992, and secured board designs from shaping luminaries Dale Velzy, Reynolds Yater, and Donald Takayama, among others. When paired with the latest epoxy production techniques, capable of producing surfboards that were far lighter, stronger, and more durable than the age-old polyurethane foam and fiberglass models (French can be viewed on the company website bashing the bottom of a Surftech Tuflite board with a club to no apparent effect) Surftech's line of signature shapes surfed well, and sold even better. Within 5 years of its founding Surftech had outsourced production to Thailand and was knocking out 75,000 boards annually, sold in surfshops worldwide. As of 2012, Surftech offered over 90 different models, from longboards to shortboards to standup paddleboards, including shapes from names as diverse as Simon Anderson, Channel Islands, Rusty, and Joel Tudor. More importantly, the company established itself as the first feasible challenger to the polyurethane foam and fiberglass surfboard empire.
