Multileveled surfboard bottom design. An early version of the tri-plane hull was introduced in 1968 by Hobie Surfboards as a variation on the vee-bottom concept; it was reintroduced nine years later by Los Angeles board-makers Jeff Ho and Mickey Fremont, then popularized in the late '70s and early '80s by Santa Barbara design-guru-in-the- making Al Merrick.
