The first women's surf magazine, published out of Long Beach, California, from 1995 to 2001. Wahine was founded by Marilyn Edwards, former triathlete and director of the speech and hearing clinic of Long Beach City College, and newspaper journalist Elizabeth Glazner. Edwards sold her vintage Porsche to cover print costs for the first edition of Wahine, and just six issues total were published from 1995 to 1997, before it became a quarterly in 1998. Women have always been primarily represented in the male-owned-and-operated surf press as sexed-up bikini chicks, so female surfers were thrilled to see page after page of women-only contest, travel, and history features in Wahine. "Hooray!" an early letter to the editor began. "Finally a mag for the rest of us!" But at times Wahine seemed nearly as dedicated as other surf publications to the beach-babe ethic, filling a majority of pages, both advertising and editorial, with perfectly groomed nubile surfettes. Old school feminists meanwhile grimaced at Wahine columns such as "Beach Beauty," in which the editors pledged to "dig into the makeup bags of hardcore waterwomen to find out what beauty products they can't live without." Wahine circulation peaked at about 45,000 in 2001, but the magazine folded at the end of the year. Partly because of Wahine's success, Surfer and Surfing soon began pub- lishing ancillary women's surf magazines—SurferGirl and Surfing Girl.
