Annual black-tie-optional promotional event and fund-raiser, held in Orange County, California, organized and hosted by the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA), a 1989-founded industry group. The first Waterman's Ball took place in 1990, at the Newport Beach Marriott, in a banquet room decorated with dozens of hanging papier-ma?che? seahorses, jellyfish, and barracudas. Four hundred people paid $100 a plate to attend. Donated items—framed surf art and photographs, surf instruction from former world champion Tom Carroll, Hawaiian vacations, surfboards from Al Merrick, Gary Linden, and Phil Becker—were raffled or auctioned, and about $30,000 in proceeds were divided between the United States Surfing Federation and the Surfrider Foundation environmental group. The Waterman Achievement Award, designed to honor a life's work in surfing, was added to the Waterman's Ball in 1993, and its presentation soon became the event highlight. Achievement Awards have gone to Hobie Alter (1993), Bruce Brown (1994), Walter Hoffman (1995), Rell Sunn (1996), John Severson (1997), Greg Noll (1998), Gerry Lopez (1999), Jack O'Neill (2000), Bud Browne (2001), and Fred Hemmings (2002). Nine hundred people at $175 a plate ($10 well drinks and valet parking not included) attended the 2000 Waterman's Ball, held at the Salt Creek Ritz-Carlton. At those prices, cheeky Surf News reporter Gina Makin noted, "You get a lot less surfers and a lot more accountants. I'd say if the Ritz-Carlton Ballroom suddenly filled with ten feet of water, half the guys here wouldn't be seen again." See also Surf Industry Manufacturers Association.
