Surf-themed waterpark in Mission Beach, California. Wave House San Diego was founded in 2005 by inventor/businessman Tom Lochtefeld, and built around his FlowRider standing wave technology. The 40,000 square foot park features three separate restaurants, a shopping center, the Sound Wave indoor auditorium, a fitness center, 50 meter swimming pool, poolside bar, hundreds of well-tanned coeds -- and "Bruticus Maximus," the biggest man-made standing wave in the world, capable of producing ten-foot barrels from water moving at 30 miles per hour. The San Diego location was the Wave House's second iteration; Wave House Durban opened in South Africa in 2001, and locations have since sprung up in Chile and Singapore. MTV's Total Request Live spent a week filming at Wave House San Diego in 2006, and Hawaiian pro surfers Jamie O'Brien, Kalani Chapman, Flynn Novak, and Braden Dias were flown over to surf the FlowRider behind the TRL hosts. The Hawaiians' performance was a hit with both the audience and the surfers. "I never thought it'd be possible to get barreled and come out a few feet from hundreds of chicks," Novak marveled. "That's always been a dream."
