Surfboard-maker and shop owner from Virginia Beach, Virginia; founder in 1968 of Wave Riding Vehicles, the East Coast's best-selling board company. 

White was born (1940) in Boston, Massachusetts, began surfing in 1963, founded Bob White Surfboards in Virginia Beach the following year, and changed the name of his company to Wave Riding Vehicles (WRV) in 1968. 

He marketed the new company with a series of simple, text-heavy black-and-white print ads that often featured line drawings of his latest model surfboards, each identified only by a number. (The double-ender Model No. 2, introduced in 1969, had a fin box on either end; all early WRV boards were stringerless and uncolored.) 

The company was helped by the fact that the WRV logo—five jumping dolphins arranged in an opened-ended circle—was one of the sport's best-designed marks. 

White made boards for some of the East Coast's hottest surfers, including Bruce Valluzzi and Jimbo Brothers; he was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame in 1996.
