Midsummer women's professional longboard com- petition held annually since 1999 at Boca Barranca, Costa Rica. The world pro tour has named a men's longboard world champion since 1986, and the biannual amateur world championships (now the World Games) have produced a men's longboard winner since 1988. The Women's World Longboard Championship is the first title of its kind for females. Organized by California events promoter Hank Raymond—moved to action in part by his competitive longboarder daughter Kirsten—along with Toes on the Nose beachwear founder Richard Allred, the first Women's World Longboard Championship (WWLC) was held as an adjunct to the seventh annual Rabbit Kekai Classic. Fifty-two women competed for a total prize purse of $4,000; the mud-brown rivermouth surf at Boca Barranca was small but perfectly shaped, with some rides lasting more than a minute, and the general atmosphere of the three-day event, in contrast to virtually all men's surf contests, was easygoing and fun. Hawaii-raised surfer/model Daize Shayne, 22, won the contest. WWLC prize money was doubled in 2000, and first place went to 1999 runner-up Cori Schumacher, from California, who competed with a mild concussion and stitches in both legs, the result of rolling her car on the freeway a week earlier. Schumacher repeated in 2001; California's Kim Hamrock won in 2002. A small number of professional women's longboarding contests had meanwhile taken place in America, France, Australia, and Brazil, and the women pros, as much as they enjoyed the WWLC, hoped to see the new events tied together into a world championship tour, similar to the Association of Surfing Professionals' shortboard circuit.
