Professional competition for surfers 19 and under, sponsored by beachwear and wetsuit powerhouse Billabong and administered by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP); regarded as a preview to world pro tour title contenders. The World Junior Championship is limited to 48 contestants, chosen primarily from the top-ranked surfers in each of the ASP's seven regional districts. Since 2003, the event has been held in early January, at Narrabeen, NSW, Australia; it has a 10-day waiting period, and uses the same format as World Championship Tour contests. The prize purse for the 2005 World Junior Championship was $45,000. The first World Junior Championship was held in late 1998, in head-high surf at Maili Point, on the west side of Oahu. Future world tour winner Andy Irons earned $6,000 for the win, but he shared surf-press headlines with a pair of six-foot sharks, who cruised through the Maili lineup during the early rounds and sent three of the competitors scrambling up onto dry reef.
