International circuit of professional longboard contests, inaugurated in 1986 and sanctioned by the Association of Professional Surfers (ASP). From 1986 to 1991, the longboard title was based on aggregate points over a circuit of events; from 1992 to 2000 it was decided solely by the Oxbow World Longboard Championship contest; in 2001 it returned to a circuit format. The World Longboard Tour (WLT) is for men only; a separate Women's World Longboard Championships event was started in 1999. As longboarding grew in popularity in the late '70s and early '80s, the formation of a longboard world championship was inevitable. It came about in 1986 after a two-year lobbying effort by 1966 world champion Nat Young of Australia. The debut longboarding "world tour" consisted of two events in New South Wales, Australia, worth a cumulative $16,450; Young won the title easily. Brazil and France were added to the schedule before the decade was out; California was added in 1990. Young won three more titles during this period. The single-event Oxbow World Longboard Championship debuted in Biarritz, France, in 1992, with a field of 48 surfers and a $30,000 purse. The finals of the 1993 Oxbow Championships, held in rough surf at Haleiwa, Hawaii, highlighted the longboard schism between traditionalists and the progressives; two of the four finalists, Rusty Keaulana of Hawaii and Alex Salazar of Brazil, rode more or less in the traditional style, trimming often and walking the nose; Rob Bain and Glen Winton of Australia, both former shortboard world title contenders, rode their nine-foot longboards as if they were six-foot tri-fins. Judges scored both approaches equally. Keaulana won, Winton was second, and over the next few years the traditionalists for the most part would set the longboard standard. The 1994 Oxbow event at Malibu, California, is regarded as a low point in world longboarding com- petition, as the three Hawaiian finalists—Keaulana, Lance Hookano, and Bonga Perkins—ganged up to prevent sole California entrant Joel Tudor from catching any quality waves. Keaulana again won. In an unrelated event, Joe Tudor (Joel's father) and Lance Hookano beat up a 43-year-old Malibu regular who refused to leave the water on the final day of compe- tition; the surfer was hospitalized. A circuit-based world championship returned in 2001, with three events on the schedule worth a total of $170,000.
