The World Surfing Games were founded in 1996 as a way to attract the attention of the International Olympic Committee, in hopes that surfing would be considered for inclusion in Olympic Games—not necessarily a popular goal among the sport's rank and file, but one that amateur contest organizers had dreamed about for decades.
