Non-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting important surf breaks worldwide; founded in 2009 in Half Moon Bay, California, by members of the Save the Waves coalition. Inspired by UNESCO's World Heritage strategy, WSR proactively targets world class surf breaks, as well as those of historical importance, before they are directly threatened by development. In October, 2010, Malibu became the first site to be named a World Surfing Reserve. Portugal's Ereciera followed in 2011, with Santa Cruz and Manly Beach joining the list in 2012. The organization has no legal authority to protect breaks, and the designation as a World Surfing Reserve, however, is symbolic. But as the group points out, there is power in establishing a surf break as culturally and even economically significant to its surroundings. On the political level, WSR also helps create local "stewardship councils." Several big-name surf world figures sit on the WSR's "Vision Council," including the ASP's Rabbit Bartholomew, Reef surfwear magnate/philanthropist Fernando Aguerre, and Surfrider CEO Jim Moriarty.
