Writer and book distributor from Los Angeles, California, best known for his 1973 guidebook

Wright was born (1943) and raised in West Los Angeles, began surfing in 1953 not long after moving to Hermosa Beach, and graduated with a B.S. in business from the University of Southern California in 1965. After four years in the military, Wright spent two years living in Hawaii. He 1972 he returned to California and published 

, similarly formatted but more detailed (178 pages), arrived the following year. Both were published by Mañana Press.

Wrights DIY-looking books are both  loaded with black-and-white photographs, and while Wright keeps to a minimalist writing style, his voice is pure early-'70 surf, as exemplified by the short entry for a Santa Barbara County reefbreak called Little Drakes: "A hairball right. Peak sucks out across a shallow rock shelf and grinds either right or left. Works on any winter swell. Starts to smoke around eight feet."

California beaches at the time were mired in localism, and nonresident surfers in many areas were kept away through intimidation and sometimes violence. Wright's thorough and highly practical book—citing more than 400 breaks between south San Diego and Brookings, Oregon, illustrated with maps and photographs, and offering tips on access, optimum tide, and swell direction for each break—was therefore viewed by many California surfers as nothing less than heretical. 

 magazine's review went out of its way to make this point:

Respect its value and it'll bring you plenty of pleasure. But if you neglect to remember that this is 1973 and you must Honor Thy Local, then save your $2.95 because Surfing California could very well be the Root of All Evil. Use it well . . .  and don’t leave it in full view inside your car.

 very much belonged to, and fit in with, the age in which it was published. And because no similar guidebooks were produced for 20-plus years, 

 remained on the shelves for decades. Wright wasn't much of a record-keeper, but in 2001 he estimated that 

 sold between 60,000 and 75,000 copies, total. 

Wright founded Mountain and Sea Books, a small Redondo Beach publishing and distributing business, in 1972. He later produced a series of poster-size maps charting the surf breaks in Baja, Hawaii, and the American East Coast. 

In 1979, Wright reprinted John "Doc" Ball's seminal photo book 

 in 1983 he reissued Tom Blake's 1935 book 

 (re-titling it Hawaiian Surfriders 1935). In 1976, Wright wrote and published

At its peak in 1990, Mountain and Sea offered nearly 50 surf-related books, with a distribution network consisting almost entirely of American surf shops.
