NOTES, from Lee Williams on Facebook: Matt when searching the Encyclopedia of surfing website I I can't find a reference to Charlie Wright 1903 1991 considered the father of surfing in San Diego he learned to surf in 1919 from Duke Kahanamoku Charlie and Duke remained lifelong friends Charlie started building his own boards short by standard of the day in the seven to eight foot range . In the early 1920s Charlie was advertising his services as a professional Waterman stuntman maybe the first or one of the first professional Surfers in California. documentation of his surfing demonstrations at special events amusement park openings ECT are documented in the Los Angeles Times San Diego Union and other newspapers across the US Charlie became a major stunt man coordinator in Hollywood in the mid to late 1920s he taught many Hollywood celebrities and Los Angeles Elites to surf in the 20's in the mid-1930s in Mission Beach he gave a local kid Dorian paskowitz his first surfboard 8 foot Redwood plank bolted together built in the mid-20s. In 1987 Doc paskowitz and myself had the privilege of interviewing Charlie Wright over several days at his home in Culver City overlooking the old MGM now Sony Studios where he worked in his early days a true Renaissance Man Charlie had many loves a powerboat champion and early dry Lakes hot rod record holder. And professional wrestler it was also the holder of numerous patents which made him a wealthy man by his mid-thirties he spent the rest of his life as a man of leisure pursuing his passion for diving by organizing and funding and leading oceanographic expeditions all over the world. But Charlie's first Love remained surfing he said he owed everything that happened in his life to that chance meeting with Duke in 1919 and surfing. Matt believe me I am only scratching the surface of the amazing American Rags to Riches surf story that is Charlie Wright. When doc paskowitz told me in the mid 80s about Charlie Wright learning from Duke and giving doc his first board only the oldest Surfers Docs age and older remembered Charlie doc couldn't believe it when I found Charlie Wright believed in surfing circles to be dead for decades with various rumors and arranged for us to interview him they had not seen each other for over 50 years they immediately connected as fellow Waterman and told stories their families never heard.
